Topic Overview: If you hit your ball out of bounds or lose it (you have three minutes to search for your ball before it becomes lost), your only option is to go back to the spot of your previous stroke to play under stroke and distance. The only exceptions to this are if your ball is lost in a penalty area (when you can use any of the penalty area relief options) or lost in an abnormal ground condition or in an obstruction.

What is out of bounds in soccer? Also known as out of play, it is the area of a soccer pitch outside the area formed by the sidelines and end lines. If the ball crosses these boundary lines, the ball is declared dead by officials and must be put back into play via a corner kick or throw in. The lines themselves and the field of play are inbounds.
The shortest rule in soccer, Law 9 of the Laws of the Game, “The Ball In and Out of Play,” addresses the status of the ball being “in play,” when it is within the perimeter lines of the field, or “out of play,” when it is outside of the boundary lines (perimeter lines). The boundary lines, or the four outer-most lines that bound the field, are the two Goal Lines (the “end-lines,” where the goals are located) and the two Touch Lines (the “side-lines”).
A soccer field is rectangular with white painted lines marking its boundaries. When a ball is played completely across one of the outside lines, the ball is out of bounds and play stops completely. There must be visible grass between the ball and the white line for the ball to be considered out of bounds; if the ball is touching the white line, it is still in play.
Out of Bounds Out of bounds occurs when the ball completely crosses over the boundary line. Throw-in When throwing the ball in at throw-in, the ball must be thrown from behind and over the head using both hands. When the ball leaves the thrower's hands, both of his/her feet must be touching the ground. More Soccer Links:
Soccer Out of Bounds. The ball is considered out of bounds or out of play when it completely crosses the goal (end) line or touch (side) line. It must completely cross the line, meaning that 100% of the ball must cross 100% of the line. All that matters is that the ball is over the line.
Ball Out of Bounds. Any time the ball goes out of bounds, it results in a kick-in for the opposition. The opposing team must be a sufficient distance away on all kick-ins. If the ball goes out for a goal kick, the ball may be placed anywhere on the goal line. Goals cannot be scored directly from a kick-in or goal kick.
